Appointment of New Superintendent

The Eureka City Schools Board of Trustees is delighted to announce that a finalist for the position of Superintendent of Eureka City Schools has been identified and final negotiations for a contract are in progress. It is anticipated that ratification of the appointment of Dr. Fred Van Vleck as the district’s next superintendent will occur on March 21, 2012, at the regular meeting of the Board of Education. Currently, Van Vleck is the Assistant Superintendent of Business Services for Ceres Unified School District.
A Humboldt County native, Van Vleck says he is excited about the opportunity to return to his roots and work with students and staff in Eureka. “I am honored that the Board of Trustees has selected me to be Superintendent, and I am excited to move my family of five back home. I am especially proud to be part of this district that has maintained a high quality of education for all students,” Van Vleck said.
The Board of Trustees made its decision with input gathered from all key stakeholder groups in the District regarding the qualities of the next Superintendent. The Board was assisted in the search by Jim Brown and Don Iglesias, consultants from the firm of Leadership Associates.
Based on the feedback we received from our parents, staff, and community members, we were looking for someone who is a collaborative leader and who is familiar with and committed to Eureka City Schools’ mission, vision, core values, and community. Both internal and external candidates were considered and after a rigorous screening, interview, followed by a visit to Fred’s current district, he was chosen as the best fit for Eureka City Schools.
David Demant, Elementary Music Teacher and member of the team that visited Dr. Van Vleck in Ceres said, "Dr. Van Vleck is an innovative leader and a proven team builder who honors all members of the educational community. When making the tough decisions that the future will surely present, we can count on him to hold our children's best interests as his compass. The teachers in Eureka are thrilled to welcome him into our educational family."
While in Ceres, Van Vleck also served as the founding principal of a new high school and the Director of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction. Earlier in his career, he was an assistant principal and teacher.
“I look forward to working with Eureka City Schools’ students, staff, and community as we strive to provide a high level of instruction where each child can learn and achieve his or her fullest potential,” Van Vleck said.
