Nourishing Body and Mind – Alice Birney serves nutritious food from its Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Cart

Eureka City Schools is delighted to announce Alice Birney Elementary school is the first Northern Humboldt County school to receive a grant from the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP). The FFVP is a federal program providing free fresh fruits and vegetables to students in participating elementary schools. The goal of the program is to create healthier eating habits amongst our youngest children to positively impact their present and future health. Through the FFVP, Alice Birney is expanding the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience and encouraging healthy eating habits with hopes that they last a life time.

One of the best parts of the program is the flexibility schools have in implementing it. Alice Birney’s Principal, Beth Holcomb, along with her creative staff came up with the concept of a fresh fruit and vegetable cart which is wheeled out to the playground to serve the locally grown, delicious fruits and vegetables directly to students. Holcomb shared, "Our students at Alice Birney absolutely love the FFVC! They especially appreciate the fresh, local offerings and the friendly servers. This is yet another way that Eureka City Schools and our greater community show our students that they are cared about and cared for. These are the deepest lessons to learn, affecting a child's classroom and community connections."

When speaking of the new FFVP, Food Service Director Laura Chase raved, “This program is simply amazing. A couple of students told me this morning they were so happy to get juicy, fresh picked apples. The program requires a lot of work, but is worth every minute when you see the smiles on the faces of students as they visit the cart. It's been the highlight of my day!”

Eureka City Schools is grateful to be a part of the federal FFVP and applauds the hard work of our Food Service Director, Laura Chase, in pursuing the grant for Alice Birney. With this grant we have been able to expand the fresh, healthy food options available to our students, encourage good eating habits, and nourish their bodies and minds.
