T here weren’t any real roadrunners present for Washington Elementary School’s 4th Biannual Roadrunner Run, but nearly 378 K–6 students and a group of parent volunteers showed their school spirit by running on October 22. The school and the PTA have co–sponsored the walk/jog/run–a–thon every other year since the fall of 1993. Washington School principal Kathleen Honsal said, “The Roadrunner Run is an important event because it promotes school spirit, it involves parents and community members, and it raises money for school and class projects. It gets kids excited about athletics.” Each participant received a T–shirt in the morning as well as a popsicle upon completion of the race. PTA Event Chairman John Friedenbach said the Roadrunner Run has raised more than $30,000 since its inception. This year he expects the pledges from the community to reach at least $10,000. The money helps support the technology program, school–wide student activities, and PTA activities. The Run was the first school event conducted on the newly–renovated Washington fields. Eureka Rotary, the Humboldt Area Foundation, Redwood Empire Little League, Humboldt Youth Soccer, St. Bernards High School, and Eureka City Schools formed a successful community partnership to transform the blacktop–like ground into new fields. The $75,000 project was completed in August after installing an irrigation system and grass. The new facilities also feature new backstops, dugouts, bleachers, baseball diamonds, rest rooms, a snack bar, and improved drainage system.
