Superintendent’s message

By James W. Scott, Ed.D.

T his edition of The Reporter highlights many of the wonderful events and activities that occur throughout Eureka City Schools on a daily basis. Our first annual “Principal for a Day” was a great success. We appreciated the participation of all of our new “principals.” Spring brings testing and we certainly have our share. As a result of the new accountability standards mandated by the state, we will continue to be required to increase the amount of testing. The Stanford Achievement Test (SAT-9) is required of all schools in the state. This test is used to gauge district–wide student achievement in comparison with all districts in the state. Although somewhat controversial, this ranking system using the SAT-9 is in place for all California schools. Student results on the SAT-9 are also used as one measure in determining if individual students have met district grade–level standards for purposes of promotion/retention. We are doing everything we can to create a stress–free, test–taking environment for our students. We will be sharing individual student achievement with parents when the results are returned to us from the publishing company. The Governing Board wishes to express their appreciation for the abundance of community support we have enjoyed this year in Eureka City Schools. Thank you!
