Superintendent’s message

By James W. Scott, Ed.D.

H appy New Year! There are many examples of service learning projects featured in this edition of the Reporter. People serving people, and in our case, students giving back to their community is a critical focus for our district. Students developing and increasing awareness of the needs of others is fundamental to the future health of our society. Eureka City Schools is proud to be a national leader in service learning.

One only has to pick up our local newspaper or watch our local TV news to recognize the extent Eureka students are involved with helping the elderly, disadvantaged, and the younger students in our schools. Students reflect on their involvement and write of their experiences. These are the kinds of learning experiences that will carry forward in developing lifelong learners.

I would also like to welcome Lisa Pace as our newest board member. The entire school board of Eureka City Schools is comprised of dedicated, caring individuals. Their commitment in time and energy is testimony to their collective dedication to making Eureka City Schools the educational leader on the North Coast.
