District excels during state compliance review
By Sheldon J. Reber, Director of School and Community Relations

P rofessional development opportunities for teachers, service learning for students K-12, and a safe climate for Eureka High School students are just some of the commendations received by Eureka City Schools from the California Department of Education during their three–day review of the district.

The state’s Coordinated Compliance Review (CCR), is required every four years and is a two-year process. The first year, the district performs a thorough self–review of all schools and programs. The following year, a team from the California Department of Education visit the district to validate the self–review and look for noncompliance.

According to JoAnn Davenport, director of elementary education, “The CCR validation review was a very positive experience for the district. The state department team was committed to assisting us rather than trying to find us out of compliance.”

Davenport had high praise for district and school staff during the process. “Thanks to all of our hard working staff who were part of this process last year and this year, the CCR was a huge success. Eureka City Schools pulled through with flying colors one more time,” she said.

The report praised many school programs. “Eureka High School is commended for establishing a safe, positive, and caring climate for students by providing a wide array of exceptionally well implemented support services,” the report states.

The report went on to praise student services such as “individual student counseling, conflict management, tobacco–use cessation, school resource officer, and the use of AmeriCorps and Project Stem mentors.”

The team also praised Eureka High’s vocational education programs. “Eureka City Schools is commended for keeping its vocational education programs intact and robust in a time when vocational education is in broad decline in most California schools,” the report noted.
