Retired Eureka teacher publishes memoir

Reprinted from the Humboldt Beacon

S arah Carter, an English teacher at Eureka High School from 1930 to 1963, has published her biography entitled “The Time of My Life: A Memoir.” Carter, who celebrated her 95th birthday December 15, spent more than 40 years as a California school teacher. She was past president of the California Teachers Association and has been recognized for her contribution to public education by numerous business and professional organizations.

A tale of the millennium, her memoir parallels the important events of this century including the wars, the Great Depression, changing race relations, and numerous cultural milestones. Against that background, she weaves her own life history including her early days growing up in a small Missouri town, adjusting to life in Eureka in the 1930s, her love of teaching, and her lively, intellectual life and world travels which she continues to this day.

Her positive affect on students and fellow teachers is a reflection of her remarkable career.

“Sarah Carter was an inspiring teacher who touched the lives of students in many special ways. She knew how to bring out the best in her students,” said Doris Mullen, class of 1950 and Eureka resident.

Now living in San Carlos, in the San Francisco peninsula, Sarah Carter continues her dedication to education. With a loyal following of friends, many of whom are former students, Carter has created a scholarship fund through the Humboldt Area Foundation for Eureka High School seniors who wish to continue their education in the arts and humanities. The first scholarship will be awarded at the 50th reunion of her students’ class of 1950 in June 2000.
