EHS Internet consulting helps students succeed

Michelle Hutchins, EHS Digital High School Coordinator

E ureka High School students have Internet access to some remarkable free resources that can help them chose a college, explore careers, research financial aid, and much more. The high school has purchased the Education and Career Opportunities System (ECOS) by Embark.com. ECOS guides students through the process of making important life decisions and provides them with as much information as possible to succeed.

With ECOS, students can access their free, personal account from any Internet-ready computer including those at school, libraries, Internet cafés and home. ECOS walks students through the processes of exploring careers and majors, choosing the right school, and researching different financial aid solutions. Students can also register with CollegeRecruiter, an online program which puts students in front of top college and university recruiters. Embark.com's online application system, which allows students to create and submit the highest quality applications via the Internet, is also available.

In addition to the above features, ECOS can help students:

  • Research financial aid options. The ECOS Scholarship Search gives students access to 629,000 scholarships as well as loan and grant information. A Finance Module provides information and tools to apply for government financial aid.

  • Find a mentor. The Mentor Module provides email mentoring from counselors, alumni, and industry professionals in order to help students make informed decisions. In addition, forums for parents, professional advisors, students and counselors provide a nationwide support network to share ideas with peers and experts.

  • Learn life skills and create a portfolio. New this year, the Life Skills Module and Portfolio provides students with an organized approach to achieving their life goals. The Life Skills Module teaches "real world" responsibilities such as creating budgets, apartment hunting and building credit. The "Portfolio" section organizes personal information such as tasks, letters, resumes, and profiles.

We believe this is a valuable tool and encourage all students and parents to utilize this free service. For more information and instruction on how to get signed up, please contact Michelle Hutchins, digital high school coordinator, at 476-1610.
