Eureka High students look into their futures

By Courtney Burgess,
School and Community Relations Intern

E ureka High School students got the chance to take a look at their future careers during the second-annual schoolwide Career Summit on March 29. The all-day event, organized by Eureka High's Special Projects office, included over 200 community members from local businesses, organizations, and schools. The community members showcased diverse future careers and opportunities available locally for students. Throughout the day students were given personal guidance on achieving their career goals.

The Career Summit began with an outstanding keynote speaker, Tyler Durman, sponsored by Security National Partners. Durman is a professional motivational speaker who travels the country speaking on issues relevant to high school students. Durman encouraged students to be active participants in their education and stressed the importance of the choices they make now and the impact those choices could have on their lives.

Students were able to talk with representatives from a wide array of career fields during the Career Fair, held in the cafeteria and gymnasium. Representatives talked with students one-on-one to answer questions regarding what skills and training were needed in their profession. Some representatives brought samples of their work and some demonstrated what their career entails. A local pottery maker spun clay in the gym, while outside students were given a tour of an ambulance by paramedics.

After the Career Fair, students returned to their classes to listen to special guest speakers. Each community speaker was placed in a class that related to their occupation. Guest speakers were able to relate the students' coursework to their career.

The Career Summit is part of an effort by Eureka High's staff to have students take a closer look at their own strenghths and particular areas of interest and to incorporate these into their future. Students are also encouraged to develop plans to achieve their goals.

Each year the Career Summit provides a unique atmosphere for the students to become better informed and take a personal look at the many different opportunities available in the community.
