PTA Membership is only $5.00 and your money does so much
for our school.
It helps fund classroom field trips, Musical Theatre Club,
Running Club, Golf Club, Jump Rope Club, Science Night
and all the other PTA supported events.
Thank you!

PTA hosts several events throughout the school year, including important fundraisers that are used to provide support school-wide projects or in classrooms.  Some ways the PTA helps to make THIS school strong include:

PENCILS – There is a pencil machine in the cafeteria.  The pencils are 25˘ each and come in a variety of designs.

We now have a Recycle Account set up at Eureka Community Recycling Center on Hawthorne Street and also at the Arcata Community Recycling Center!  They are sister companies.  The account number is 381.  Anyone can drop off recyclables that have CRV value and either ask them to deposit the money in account 381, or Lafayette Elementary School PTA.  They will mail us a check quarterly.  So pass the word around to neighbors, friends, and relatives that often recycle but don't worry about the money.

RECYCLE your old cell phones and ink cartridges by donating them to the PTA.  A collection box is in the LIBRARY and also in the OFFICE.  Thank you!

Please save your "Box Tops for Education" coupons.  They are on most General Mills products.  Lafayette uses them to receive money for playground equipment.  Before turning them in, please trim them down to just the coupon only.  They can be turned in to your child's classroom or the office anytime!

BECOME A PTA MEMBER .. it's not too late to join and help achieve our goal of 200 members!  Anyone can join for $5.00.  No commitment required.  Extra envelopes are in the office.  Becoming a member of PTA helps support your child.

PTA is a national organization dedicated to the welfare of children, at home, at school, and in the community.  It strives to develop a closer relationship between parents and the school community.  Research shows that students and schools succeed with parent involvement.  Watch for your membership registration information to come home with your student, invite your entire family to participate (grandparents, aunts, uncles), and return it quickly to show your support of Lafayette School.

Information regarding REFLECTIONS ENTRIES:

        Reflections 2007/2008  .....   "I can make a difference by...."

1.  Theme
The theme for the 2007/2008 program is I can make a difference by...". Only new pieces of artwork inspired by the theme are acceptable.

2. Student eligibility through local PTA Students must participate in the Reflections Program through a PTA/PTSA in good standing. Parent groups not affiliated with National PTA are not eligible to sponsor this program. It is the responsibility of the state and local PTA/PTSA to determine each students eligibility in the Reflections Program.

A student may develop an entry in or outside of school.

3. Grade divisions
Students may enter the Reflections Program in the appropriate division for their grade. The divisions are as follows:

  1. Primary: preschool - grade 2

  2. Intermediate: grades 3 - 5

  3. Middle/Junior: grades 6 - 8

  4. Senior: grades 9 - 12

If students do not fall under specific grade divisions, National PTA suggests that they be grouped as follows:

  1. Primary: up to age 7

  2. Intermediate: ages 8 - 10

  3. Middle/Junior: ages 11 - 13

  4. Senior: ages 14+

It is the responsibility of the local PTA/PTSA to determine the appropriate division if necessary.

4. Arts areas
Students may submit works in any of the six arts areas:

  1. Literature

  2. Musical composition

  3. Photography

  4. Visual arts

  5. Dance choreography

  6. Film/video production

National PTA does not limit the number of entries a student may submit.

5. Children with disabilities
National PTA believes that each child with a disability should be provided a free and appropriate public education. Therefore, the Reflections Program at the national level does not have a special division for students with disabilities. National PTA believes it is the right of parents to place their child in the Reflections Program grade division that best reflects the child's developmental age. However, guidelines for state and local Reflections Programs vary. Check with your state PTA for its guidelines.

6. Deadlines
Each student must submit his or her work by the deadline established by his or her local PTA/PTSA. Each local PTA/PTSA sponsoring the program will set a deadline for entries in adherence with the state, district, and council needs. These entries are judged, and the selected works are forwarded to the next level of judging (council, district, or state). Direct all questions regarding deadlines or rules to your state PTA or state arts chair. National PTA does not have deadlines for local, council, district, or state PTAs.

7. Judging
All national entries are judged on artistic merit, creativity, and interpretation of the theme.

The Reflections Program makes no restriction on content or subject in artwork. Students who are submitting entries need to meet school and/or local and state PTA standards. Judges review entries based upon creativity, artistic merit, and interpretation of the theme.

Each PTA determines its own judges for the program. Under no conditions may parents or students contact the judges to dispute the status of an entry. All decisions of judges are final.

8. Award recipient notification
State arts chairs will notify students who receive national recognition. State arts chairs will submit original photography and visual arts pieces to National PTA for the creation of the Reflections Program Gallery on the National PTA website.

9. Further information
Only your state PTA office and state PTA arts chair can provide you with information about your states Reflections Program rules and deadlines.

You can contact Susan Devine for more information: 445 - 0715 or knack4hire@aol.com

What is FOUNDER'S DAY?

Founders Day is a perfect time to renew the dedication to the Purposes of the PTA that were defined by PTA’s Founders more than a century ago. Each year in February, PTA honors the three founders as well as past and present PTA leaders. Through special programs and events, PTA also attempts to increase the awareness of its members and the community by highlighting achievements, activities, projects and goals.

The Founders Day celebration was created in 1910 by Mrs. David O. Mears, a charter member of the National Congress of Mothers founded by Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst in Washington, DC, February 17, 1897. The Founders Day observance has continued through the change of organization names in 1925 to the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, and the uniting in 1970 with the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers, founded in 1926 by Selena Sloan Butler, to become the National PTA (A Brief History: Working Together for Children Since 1987, 1.1.6, 4).

Issues concerning immigrants, homeless children and families, the unemployed and the uneducated, and numerous health and safety concerns still need attention. However, through PTA advocacy to enact and enforce laws, children’s health is better protected and children are better fed, housed and educated, with parents more involved in their upbringing. The vision of PTA’s founders has been realized in many ways, and now it is up to present PTA members to continue the vision.

THE FOUNDERS DAY FREEWILL OFFERING - "PTA BIRTHDAY GIFT"

Donations collected during Founders Day observances benefit the entire

organization: unit, council, district PTAs, State and National PTA.

California State PTA returns one-fourth of its offering to the district PTA and retains one fourth for its work throughout the state. Half of the offering is sent to National PTA (Unit Remittance Form 5.1.7f, 219; Forms 421).

PTA's HONORARY SERVICE AWARDS

While paying tribute to the three Founders and all who worked with them, it is also an appropriate time to show appreciation to those in your own PTA and community who have been dedicated advocates for children.

The Honorary Service Award, Continuing Service Award, Golden Oak Service Award and Very Special Person Award are bestowed on very special people to honor them for their outstanding efforts on behalf of children. Donations may also be made. (Note: Awards may be presented throughout the year.)
