"Lion" around reading!

Accelerated Reading (AR) comes to Lafayette. When students are motivated and engaged in learning, something magical happens. Their confidence and self-esteem improve. They get excited about school and they achieve tremendous academic growth.  AR motivates students to read and enjoy more challenging books.

1. Students Read Books... Students choose books at their appropriate reading levels and read them at their own pace.  Our library has put labels on our AR books.. almost 10,000 AR books are in our library collection...they are very visible!
2. Students Take a Computerized Quiz. Our library has computers for students to take tests on. These quizzes help to motivate, as well as, monitor increased reading skills.
3. Students/Parents & Teachers Get Information. Students get immediate information feedback on their reading and vocabulary progress.

Surround our children with books and literature.
Visit your library regularly, and make buying
new books a frequent treat.  Put cloth and board books in the baby's playpen
and keep one or two books in the car or truck for older children.
Show children that words are EVERYWHERE --
not just on the pages of a book, but also on cereal boxes, billboards, and street signs.
Give us a NATION OF READERS!

Any Time / Any Place ... Enjoy Reading!

Community Recognizes Lafayette's Library Angel
January 2005
Lafayette School library volunteer Betty Harmon received a Literacy Award from the Humboldt Reading Council on January 30th at the Humboldt County Library.  Mrs. Harmon was recognized during the "Mother Goose Tea" to benefit the Humboldt County Library Children's Services.  Betty has made an outstanding contribution to literacy through her love for both libraries and children.  She is known as the Lafayette Library Angel.  Betty volunteers 4 hours daily in our school library, she shelves books, cleans books, and helps children find 'that special book'.
CONGRATULATIONS Mrs. Harmon on this well deserved honor and recognition!

Welcome to the Lafayette Library, home of avid readers and inquiring minds!  Our library houses over 21,000 books, audio cassettes, math and science manipulatives and videos.  Our patrons -- students, staff, and parents check out an average of 25,000 books a year!  This is a busy place!

On our shelves live Harry Potter and Beatrix Potter and many other favorites.  We vote yearly on the California Young Reader nominated books and pick our favorites.  We learn library skills and participate in many writing contests throughout the school year.

Our school library is opened 8 hours a day.  Students, staff, and parents may check out books before school, during recesses, during class visits, or after school.  All books checked out of our school's library are due back in a week; books may be renewed. Videos may be borrowed on a daily basis only.  During the week our library participates in an intervention reading program called Universal Access.

Without a SHADOW of a doubt, our students love to read!

A continued BIG THANK YOU to Mrs. Crandell for her wonderful contributions to our school library collection.  Whether it be mentor money she has earmarked for the library, silver jewelry sales profit, or the donation of great books, Mrs. Crandell has single-handedly increased our collection size over the past few years..

Another sincere thank you goes to Teresa Ramos for her continued contribution of fantastic library books.  Teresa is a former student at Lafayette School, who currently works for a University in Fresno in their International Admissions Office.  Teresa, with the help of her sister Angie, and mother Pat, delivers 50 to 500  books at a time to our library for students to check out and enjoy!  Teresa has adopted our library and we are VERY THANKFUL...

GARY STILLMAN ... Thank you for repairing our library chair!  What an upholstery sewing master you are .... thanks!

A VERY BIG THANK YOU to all the students, parents and former students who have so very generously donated book to our school's library.
