Our "mane" focus is our cubs!
Welcome to Lafayette's Learning Center!
The Resource Specialist Program serves students with learning challenges and provides remediation so that they might be more successful in the classroom environment. We provide a nurturing and positive environment in which students may improve their academic skills and learn ways to maximize their learning potential. Collaboration among all those who work with identified students is an important aspect of this program. Susan Haase is our Resource Specialist Teacher and Maureen Baker is our instructional assistant.
We have a weekly Student Study Team (SST) ; this team (composed of Teachers, Resource Teacher, School Psychologist, Principal, Parent(s), and other personnel as needed) brainstorms ways to help our students succeed. This is also the first step before any screening or testing is done.
There is also a comprehensive counseling program, weekly serving over 100 children, that provides both prevention and intervention services. The Early Mental Health Initiative PIP program provides resiliency experiences to K-3 children who work with a Child Aide. Social Skills/Counseling groups meet weekly and are led by counseling/psychology fieldwork students or our counselor, Brooke Warren.
Services range from intensive to supportive: high (counseling), medium (PIP), or low (Friendship Club). Students are placed in groups based on identified needs as follows: self esteem, friendship skills, anger management, conflict resolution, grief, divorce, bully-victim, attention-focusing, children with autism and/or low pragmatic speech. Group composition is usually gender-specific in order to specifically serve developmental needs of boys and girls. Children of all races, ethnicities, and cultures are eagerly welcomed.
