Humboldt Math Festival

The sixth annual Humboldt Math Festival is scheduled for April 27 from, 10-2 at the Bayshore Mall in Eureka.  The festival is a community celebration of mathematics organized by Ken Pinkerton at Zane Middle School.  More that forty presenters will host puzzles, games, contests, demonstrations, and make-and-take actives. Along with career and program information from Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods. Challenge your mental faculties with contests by memorizing pi, solving soduko, and the Rubik's Cube challenge. Students work will be display in the Art and Poster Show. More Great News from Zane

I am writing to share that Zane students and staff have rocked in the past few weeks from academics to athletics! These exciting accomplishments provide a window into all the outstanding things going on in every part of Zane.

First, please join me in congratulating Kristin Sobilo for being selected as the Stagecoach Legacy Award Winner, the top honor, on February 7th during a heartwarming ceremony at Baywood.  It was my honor to attend the event along with the three students who wrote nominations on her behalf:  Helaina Stillman, Renee Barthel, and Cameren Christiansen.  Also in attendance were her husband Mike, daughter Maddie (incoming Falcon next year), her mom, and our Superintendent, Fred Van Vleck.  We were all so happy for her as we know that she is very deserving of this recognition.

Zane Crowns a Geography Bee Champion

Zane Middle School held its final competition for the National Geographic Bee on Tuesday, January 14.  Zane’s school champion was Alyssa Jimenez, a seventh-grader.  Runners up were Rocci Costa (2nd place) and Sophia Gallegos (3rd place).  Alyssa won by correctly answering the following question, “The Yaghan were a nomadic tribe indigenous to Tierra del Fuego, an island group that is divided between Argentina and what other country?”  (answer: Chile)  Alyssa will now take a geography test to apply for one of the hundred places in the California State Bee.
