On May 9, World History students Sara Woods, Katy Shumard, and Hailie Smith represented Humboldt County with their documentaries at California State History Day. Katy and Hailie created a documentary on World War II's Operation Mincemeat/Husky, the successful Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943. Sara Woods documentary on William Carson earned special recognition from the Californian State Historical Society. although they did not advance to Nationals, I am very proud of these young historians!
The EAST Community Leadership class at Eureka High School, in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Eureka Police Department (EPD) and the Office of Traffic Safety, took a proactive step in educating our high school students about making mature decisions when alcoholic beverages are involved. On April 7 and 8, the EAST class, in cooperation with city, county, and state agencies, staged the program called Every 15 Minutes at Eureka High School.
