More Great News from Zane

I am writing to share that Zane students and staff have rocked in the past few weeks from academics to athletics! These exciting accomplishments provide a window into all the outstanding things going on in every part of Zane.

First, please join me in congratulating Kristin Sobilo for being selected as the Stagecoach Legacy Award Winner, the top honor, on February 7th during a heartwarming ceremony at Baywood.  It was my honor to attend the event along with the three students who wrote nominations on her behalf:  Helaina Stillman, Renee Barthel, and Cameren Christiansen.  Also in attendance were her husband Mike, daughter Maddie (incoming Falcon next year), her mom, and our Superintendent, Fred Van Vleck.  We were all so happy for her as we know that she is very deserving of this recognition.

On Saturday, February 2nd, six Zane students received recognition at Humboldt County History Day.  Kristin Sobilo and Damon Brooks had students from their SLI (Social Studies Language Arts Integration) Class complete History Day projects and many of these were selected to be entered in the History Day competition. Two group projects were honored and two individual projects also received recognition.  One of the group projects received two medals; one from their category and a special recognition award from the Clarke Historical Museum.  The winners were:  Kaylie McCracken and Abiona Katri (2 medal winners),  Jillian McDonald and Olivia Dennison, John Lazzarotto, and Iain Fox.  It was fun to sit in the audience at the packed Van Duzer Theatre at HSU and hear the names of Zane students being called.  The students, their parents, their teachers and their principal and assistant principal were all very proud.

In each of the past three weeks our 7th grade A basketball team has earned tournament championship titles. This was truly a team effort as a different player has been named tournament MVP each week. The players earning top honors were:  Gannon Cyphers (Comet Classic), Isaak Gutierrez (Zane Tournament), and Garrison Finck (Crescent Elk Tournament). Congratulations to our League Champion 7th Grade A Basketball team.  Additionally, our 7th grade B basketball team brought home a 2nd place trophy last weekend from the Ferndale Tournament and our 8th grade team brought a Consolation Trophy at the McKinleyville Tournament last month.

Also, three students, Cathryn NoelVeatch, Jordan Basinger and Helaina Stillman, represented Zane Middle School at the Regional Spelling Bee at South Bay School. All three did well in the competition and outlasted a number of competitors from other schools.  Congratulations to Helaina Stillman who came in second place and earned the right to represent Zane Middle School in the County Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 9th.  In addition to a Certificate, she received a Spelling Bee Medal.

It is a great day to be a Zane Falcon!
