Letter to Staff from Superintendent Fred Van Vleck

I trust the summer will leave you rested and ready for the 2012-13 school year and the return of students to our schools. On August 27, almost 4,000 students will be walking through the doors of Eureka City Schools. Many of the employees that work through the summer have been working very hard preparing for the return of students, and everything is progressing well for a smooth opening. Personally, I am excited to see the first day arrive and the opportunity to meet all of you. Like you, I look forward to a successful future for our district!

It is great to be back in Humboldt County, and I want to thank each of you for the warm reception I have received coming home. My family and I have been enjoying the cool summer in Eureka and do not miss the 100-degree plus temperatures we experienced in the valley. My children are also very excited to start school in Eureka.

As we approach the start of the 2012-13 school year, I look forward to working with you in providing the best possible education to the students we serve. I know all of you work hard every day to do what is best for our students. One of my priorities is to convey the message to the community that Eureka City Schools’ staff is dedicated to providing an exceptional educational environment for children.

As we move the District forward, my focus for next year will be to work on improving the community’s perception of Eureka City Schools. Last year we had over 400 students leave our District on inter-district agreements to attend our neighboring schools. My hope is that we can restore these parents’ faith in our District and more importantly, earn the faith of the parents of our future students. We will only be able to achieve this goal if we work together as a team.

I invite you to join me at a back-to-school orientation on Tuesday, August 21 beginning at 7:45 a.m. with a continental breakfast in the Eureka High School Cafeteria. Your principal or supervisor will be there to greet and check you in. We will then proceed to the auditorium for our meeting that will begin at 8:15 a.m. I look forward to meeting you and sharing details on the new school year and the vision for the future of Eureka City Schools.

Enjoy the rest of your summer before the commencement of the 2012-13 school year, and I will see each of you on August 21!
