EHS to Celebrate New Athletic HOF Class

Four years ago, Eureka High School established its athletic hall of fame to honor athletes, teams, and coaches who were essential in the creation of the tradition of excellence that exists at EHS.
The 2011 Induction to the Eureka High School Athletic Hall of Fame will take place Thursday October 13, in the Jay Willard Gymnasium. The induction ceremony is open to the public. Family and friends of the inductees and sports fans are especially invited to attend. Meet and mingle with the inductees at 6:15, photos at 6:45, and the ceremony starts at 7:00.
This year five athletes will be inducted.
Steve Cobine was a multi-sports star who was best known for his football success at not only EHS but College of the Redwoods and Sacramento State.
Ernie Cunningham was a multi sport athlete at EHS. He went on to play basketball at Oregon State where his career was interrupted by WW II. He then finished at Humboldt State. He is already enshrined in the St. Bernard's and Arcata Halls of Fame as a coach.
Jim Kehl excelled in of the Redwoods and played on two Stanford Rose Bowl Championship teams.
Gina Loechl, swimming, who re-established the EHS swim program by managing, coaching and scheduling events to get it back on its feet. She went on to star at the football at EHS. Later he went on to star at College University of Wisconsin.
Kaci Lyle was a multi-sport athlete but was best known for her wrestling career. While at EHS she was national high school champion. A pioneer in her sport, she went on to star at Missouri Valley College and Pacific University and was among the first female wrestlers to live and train at the Olympic Training Center. She was among the finalists at the last two Olympic trials.
