Interdistrict Agreement Update to Parents/Guardians
- Published: Tuesday, February 7, 2017
We have fielded several phone calls from parents regarding Interdistrict Agreements, and I want to provide some facts to ensure everyone has the correct information.
The California Education Code requires Interdistrict Agreements for students attending school outside of their District of residence (address where the student lives). Some exceptions to this are homeless students, charter schools, private schools or parents/guardians who establish residency in another District by their place of employment. However, almost all students who attend a school, while not having a primary residence in the District boundaries, are required to have a properly approved Interdistrict Agreement.
The current countywide agreement, signed by all 30 plus Districts in Humboldt County is set to expire on June 30, 2017. This agreement was a five-year agreement, the longest period the California Education Code allows.
As with the last agreement, the Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE) is facilitating discussions with Districts in the county to determine if Districts want to continue with a countywide agreement and, if so, what will it look like. I recognize the angst this can cause for parents, especially since more than 1,500 of the 17,000 students in the county are currently on Interdistrict Agreements.
A meeting of Superintendents is set for mid-February, and two additional meetings are scheduled later in February to attempt to reach an agreement. It is my sincere hope the group can come to a quick resolution, but in the meantime, there will be a lack of resolve for parents/guardians applying for Interdistrict Agreements. Currently, we are holding all new applications for Interdistrict Agreements until a resolution to the countywide agreement is obtained.
If your child has a current, up-to-date multi-year Interdistrict Agreement, the new countywide agreement will not impact the school attended until your child’s current Interdistrict Agreement expires.
