Eureka Safe Routes to School

On October 22 at 9:00 a.m., the Eureka Safe Routes to School Task Force would like you to join them in a celebration of the newly installed infrastructure improvements at Grant Elementary School.

WHO: The Eureka Safe Routes to School Task Force would like to invite you to participate in a celebration of the newly installed infrastructure improvements at Grant Elementary School that will increase safety for students walking and bicycling to school.

WHAT: The Humboldt County Public Works Department, in collaboration with the Redwood Community Action Agency and Humboldt County DHHS Public Health, wrote a successfully funded grant to the Federal Safe Routes to School Program in 2012. Recommendations for the physical improvements were a direct result of a Walkability Assessment conducted at Grant Elementary School in 2011. The Walkability Assessment consisted of planners, engineers, city and county staff, public health representatives, school administrators, law enforcement, parents, and community members walking around the school and neighborhood to observe the walking and bicycling environment during peak arrival time and identify potential solutions to safety concerns.

WHY: After the Assessment, the Grant PTA applied for and received a community mini-grant to kick-start an education and encouragement program to help more students walk to school safely. The mini-grant enabled the PTA to purchase incentives and materials to support monthly Walk to School Day events. The PTA also worked together to clean up and apply fresh gravel to a historically used walking path to school. The enthusiasm and dedication of the PTA to enable more students to safely walk to school through school-led encouragement programs helped create a competitive grant. The funding received by Humboldt County Public Works through Safe Routes to School provided for new sidewalks, signage, a raised crosswalk, and a pedestrian median on busy F Street at the corner of Oak Street.

WHERE & WHEN: Please join Humboldt County Public Works, Humboldt County DHHS Public Health, Eureka City Schools, Redwood Community Action Agency, and the Eureka Safe Routes to School Task Force at Grant Elementary School (3901 G Street) on Wednesday October 22nd at 9AM sharp for a ribbon cutting ceremony and optional infrastructure tour to highlight and celebrate the successful collaboration that led to the construction of these improvements.
