Project Overview:
In year one, Eureka High Schools Youth Ready to Respond team worked
on in-class projects including GIS mapping of emergency shelter
site in Eureka, making the Youth Ready to Respond webpage (?), designing
emergency contact cards for elementary school students that include
emergency contact information for students. The Youth Ready to Respond
team worked with the volunteer Center of the Redwoods to plan and
host a “Disaster Preparedness and Community Safety” conference on
April 20th, 2005 at the Eureka High School Campus. It was attended
by over 300 4th and 6th grade Eureka City Schools students plus
teachers and chaperones.
In year 2, Eureka High Schools Youth Ready to Respond team will
expand to include other groups on campus including other EAST Lab
projects: Project Diversity, Safety First, Youth Relay, HERO- Humboldt
Equestrian Relay Organization, and others), four leadership classes
(Student Government, Diversity Leadership, Agriculture Leadership
and NJROTC Leadership.
The project intends to include five other schools in the area
with EAST Labs as project partners. The years work with each of
these groups will culminate with a “Disaster Preparedness and Community
Safety” conference on April 12th. 4th graders from the entire region
will be invited to participate in a day long events with workshops,
hands on activities, and demonstrations coordinated and put on by
the various groups working with “Youth Ready to Respond”.
