Naval Science Instructors

Lieutenant Commander Kevin Kleckner, USCG (Ret)

LCDR Kleckner is a retired search and rescue helicopter pilot. A native of Lena, Illinois, he started his military service in the Army in 1977 before transferring to the Coast Guard in 1986. He has served tours of duty in Frankfurt, Germany (2), San Francisco, Mobile, AL, Chicago and McKinleyville, CA. He started with NJROTC in 2002. He has lived in Humboldt County since 1995.

 

LCDR Kleckner has a B.A. degree in German from the University of Maryland. He has an M.A. degree in Organizational Leadership and an M.Ed. from Regent University. He is a graduate of the Naval War College Command and Staff Course. He holds a California Special Subjects Teaching Credential and a California Administrative Services Credential.

Gunnery Sergeant Darrin Smith, USMC (Ret)

Gunnery Sergeant Smith is a retired helicopter aircrewman. Originally from Inglewood California, he joined the Marine Corps in San Diego June 1984. He has completed tours of duty in Tustin, CA, El Toro, CA, New River, NC, Miramar, CA, Iraq (2 tours) and Afghanistan. He also served 2 years as a Drill Instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.

 

Gunnery Sergeant Smith attended National University and Miramar College. He has graduated from many service schools. He holds a California Special Subjects Teaching Credential.

NJROTC instructors may be retired Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard commissioned officers, warrant officers, and enlisted personnel, E-6 through O-6, who have served a minimum of 20 years of active duty. The Head of the Department of Naval Science at a school hosting an NJROTC program is called the Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI). The SNSI is the commissioned officer or warrant officer employed by the school. Enlisted personnel employed by the school in the NJROTC program are called Naval Science Instructors (NSI).
