Special Notice! |

Eureka City Schools is restructuring.
During the process, it is very important for the public to be heard from in regards to keeping NJROTC at Eureka High School. The following is a report to the Cornerstone Committee that provides valuable information. Please let the Superintendent and School Board Members know how important Eureka High School NJROTC is to the community.
NJROTC Report to the Cornerstone Committee
The cost of the NJROTC program makes it affordable, and necessary.
According to the Navy, they will be paying the school district $57k this year for instructor salaries. The Navy also pays for uniforms, equipment, technology, field trips to military bases, office maintenance, etc.
According to the School District, their direct cost of operating the program is $93k in addition to the Navy funding.
If you take the school district cost of $93k and divide it by the current ADA rate of $6,049.05 per student, you can see if we are able to keep just 16 students in the high school, we pay for ourselves. Twenty of our students have indicated to us that they would depart EHS for other schools if NJROTC closes. The actual number is probably closer to 30. The amount of students we keep in school easily pays for the program. Even if the students do not finish high school, they stay in high school longer if they are in our program. Our counseling, guidance and structure give many students a fighting chance.
We offer a supplemental English course for all students prior to their CAHSEE test. Our students, with our high rate of Title 1 kids (73%) and lower than average GPAs maintain statistical parity with the general population when it comes to passing the exam.
We monitor attendance and grades for all cadets and provide counseling and guidance to keep them in class in support of our attendance staff. We have a much closer relationship with our students than most high school teachers. We enjoy an elementary-school-like familiarity with the students because they spend most of their free time in the NJROTC spaces.
We assist the assistant principal with discipline issues and reduce the administrative workload.
We are motivators. We keep students interested in school and provide support to core teachers by tutoring and homework monitoring. If a cadet fails repeatedly to turn in homework in ANY subject, we deliver appropriate consequences.
We are in a position to grow if other elective programs are eliminated or scaled back. We are designed to accommodate up to 150 students. The Navy would pick up the costs of supporting the additional students.
Currently, there 196 high schools around the country on the waiting list to start an NJROTC. It is a very special program with unique capabilities. |
