A Passion for Learning
Community Report • Spring 2003

Teachers and staff provide the best for Eureka’s children

Welcome to the annual report to the community from your Eureka City Schools. We have experienced a very challenging year and have accomplished great things. Our schools continue to provide the highest quality of education to the children of Eureka. Teachers and staff have been diligent in implementing new math and language arts curriculum as we address high standards for student achievement.

In our first year since the passage of Measures S and T, we have moved forward with ambitious facility improvement projects. We now have two architectural firms working in the design phase of modernization of all sites as well as the seismic retrofit at Eureka High School. The community can look forward to the exciting prospects of modernized facilities to improve learning environments. This summer we will be concentrating on installing new exterior siding at Lincoln Elementary School, constructing new breezeways at Zane Middle School, replacing Lafayette Elementary’s roof as well as putting in new classrooms at Washington and Lafayette.

The 2002-03 year brought the long-awaited renovation of the Eureka High School pool. We again extend our thanks and appreciation to Rob and Cherie Arkley whose generous donation made this community asset come back to life. This year also marked the decision to close Worthington Elementary School due to an ongoing decline in enrollment. Worthington has served generations of students and families in our community. We look forward to the day when the doors of Worthington will re-open and be filled with children.

Financial challenges for all public schools due to the state budget crisis have drawn considerable attention from staff this year. As we move into the 2003-04 school year, the district will endeavor to maintain fiscal solvency while preserving our vast array of enriching educational programs. We will make every effort to ensure appropriate resources are directed to the classroom and to student learning.

The greater Eureka community can be proud of the outstanding staff that greets and teaches your students every day. We are dedicated to providing a challenging, personalized education that reaches and expands the potential of each learner. We are respectful of the right to serve the children of our community. Thank you for your support.
