A Message From the Superintendent of Schools

May 2, 2008

Eureka City Schools Parents and Guardians,

For the past few months the Eureka City Schools Board of Education and employees have been working on our budget for the 2008/2009 school year.

The current budget proposal by the Governor, declining enrollment, and increased costs require that E.C.S. cut $3.5 million dollars for the next school year.

Eureka City Schools value these opinions and ideas from our parents and community during open board meetings, letters and e-mail, and committee meetings. E.C.S. continues to encourage all parents to communicate their thoughts to district administration and the school board. At this time the district is forced to consider reorganization of our elementary and middle schools and the possibility of closing another school, cuts to programs at all levels, a reduction to transportation and many other cost savings.

If you would like information regarding any of these concepts, or would like to share your thoughts we encourage you to attend any of our upcoming special board budget study sessions (5pm – 9pm on Monday May 5th and Tuesday May 6th) our regularly scheduled board meeting (7 pm on Wednesday May 7th) or through e-mail or phone. Budget study sessions and regular board meetings are held at 3200 Walford Ave.

We would also encourage you to contact our local representatives at the state level as well as Governor Schwarzenegger to support full funding of Proposition 98, the Minimum Guarantee for K-12 funding. Information regarding this issue can be found on the district web page through links to the PTA as well as contact information for our local officials.

Gregg Haulk, Superintendent
Eureka City Schools

All Citizens Need to Contact As Many Politicians as possible

California needs to reconsider cutting the budget of the most imporant asset we have in our state.

Our Children, Their Teachers and Their Future

Surely they are more important than some projects that are now being included in the State budget. Give the students a good education and keep them out of trouble in the future. This can not be done with the current proposed budget cuts in any of California schools. Cutting Arts, sports or music may drive more students out of state or to private schools.
