Homework Place

Our Homework Place runs Monday through Thursday from 3:05 to 3:50 p.m. The Homework Place gives students an opportunity to have a quiet place to focus on their homework, and help if they need it.

We have four Homework Places in the After School Program and each student is assigned to their own room. The rooms are supervised by the After School Recreation Leaders, AmeriCorps Leaders, school staff and tutors from the local universities. Our goal is to assist each student with their homework when necessary, tutor and follow-up with the students on their grades or missing homework assignments.

In addition to Homework Place we are introducing Language Arts and Math support classes. These classes offer concentrated support and lessons followed by a time for help with homework. Contact Kim Slack at (707) 599-2154 if you are interested in having your child enrolled in these programs.

Snack Time

After 45 minutes of homework the students get a little break to hang out with each other and eat! The students are served healthy treats, such as fruit and nuts.

On certain days, the Cooking Club will prepare a special treat. The latest homemade treat from the Cooking Club was chicken soup! Yum, yum, yum! Thank you to the Cooking Club!

It's Time to Get Active!

Our most popular 8th period choices are sports and other outside activities. We know that our students have a lot of energy and we try to provide an activity everyday to help them release some of the day's pent up energy.

The are many active 8th period choices for the students to pick from. Some favorites are the classic game of football and capture the flag. A very close second is Dodgeball. After School Leaders, Carlos and Lynne, are normally in charge of these competitive favorites and have a great time with the students.

Another popular choice that is not quite as physically demanding is the Nature Walk. After School Leader Jessica normally takes the students out on nature trails to explore and learn more about their local wilderness, weather permitting. Recently on the nature walk the group was fortunate enough to see a beautiful fox. The students love to be outside and have the chance to see some beautiful animals.

A new addition is Dance. After School Leader, Jessica, will be teaching different kinds of dance. The group is currently working on a Hip-Hop routine and starting to explore hula hoop dancing.

The games, walks and dancing are all just some of the fun in 8th period.

Let Creative Juices Flow!

Another way for our students to release some energy is creatively. So, we feel that an important part of our program are the Arts and Crafts choices. After School Leaders, Aprille and Mike, all try to bring many creative opportunities to the students.

Art for 8th period is a fun choice. There is always the option to paint or draw and more. Some recent projects were paper maché masks, clay sculptures and stress balls.

Another creative option is beading and jewelry making. This craft-based choice is offered for students to handcraft their own accessories. Students like to create bracelets, necklaces and earrings for themselves and for gifts.

Many of our students are artistically talented and Arts and Crafts will let their creative juices run wild!

Games Galore!

The After School program has a lot of games. From Jenga to Scrabble and Uno to Catch Phrase students enjoy competing against each other in all of these fun games. We also have a foosball table, two ping pong tables and wooden pool tables for the students to play with.

Many students enjoy tournaments, so recently we have had Chess and Checkers tournaments. Another popular game that many play is Yu-Gi-Oh (which the students bring on their own). Filled with monsters and spells cards, game pieces and laughter, the Board Game Spot is sure to be a good time!

Beauty Shop

After a long hard day of school nothing is more relaxing than an hour of pure pamper time. In Beauty Shop our students have a chance to pamper themselves pretty! The students (male students as well) love the opportunity to have time just for themselves.

There are many different things that happen in the Beauty Shop. At any given day it could be manicures, make-up application or hairdo experimentation. The best part is that all of these things can be going on at one time. The Beauty Shop, led by After School Leader Aprille, really does transform itself into a Beauty Salon. Surrounded by hair brushes, any color of nail polish, eye shadow, hair curlers and perfume, the Beauty Shop offers students makeovers.

Beauty Shop is a fun 8th period choice that lets the students transform themselves in an hour into whoever they want to be.

Cooking Club

Bon appetit! Cooking club is an 8th period choice that will have you licking you lips with delight. These students are on their way to becoming some amazing chefs.

After School Leader Aprille is in charge of Cooking Club and tries to have the students cook a variety of meals and snacks so that they are always learning something new. Some recent projects from the Cooking Club are nachos, spaghetti and sloppy joes, and their amazing brownies. This group works hard to create these wonderful savory treats. The Cooking Club has to measure, prepare, cook and serve in two hours enough food to feed 100 or more students!

Now it is Time to Say Goodbye…

You've just read about an afternoon in the life of Zane's After School Program. We thank you for reading and urge you to come join us for the fun. You may join the program by contacting the After School Program Coordinator Kim Slack at (707) 599-2154. If you are already in the program, thank you for your participation, our program would be nothing without our students. We would also like to thank our After School Leaders, Tutors, and Teachers who have helped make the After School Program what it is today.

The Zane After School Program tries to appeal to every kind of student. We want to make our program even better. Even though we have many 8th period choices in action now, we still want to give more choices so each student has a club that they will want to be a part of. New clubs that might be on their way are: Rock Climbing Club and Technology Club. We are constantly trying to bring new ideas and options to our students. We want them to not only have a good after school experience, but a good overall Zane Middle School experience as well. Go, Zane, Go!
